New data out Tuesday shows that more than 500,000 children in the U.S. have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic started, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The group said children represented 9.8% of all COVID-19 cases in the U.S., where more than 6.3 million total cases have been reported, per a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The AAP reported there were 70,630 new child cases, a 16% increase over two weeks, between August 20 and September 3, which brings the national total to 513,415. “Boycott Mulan” trends on Twitter after credits reveal region of China where movie was filmed – CBS News

"Boycott Mulan" was trending on Twitter following the release of the live-action film on the Disney+ streaming service Friday. Many critics pointed out that the end credits of the movie thanked the Chinese Communist Party Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Committee.  More than 1 million Chinese Uighur Muslims are being detained in government internment camps in the Xinjiang region, according to the U.N.  China calls the prison camps in Xinjiang province "re-education" facilities meant to fight extremism and separatism in the region. The U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China describes it as "the largest mass incarceration of a minority population in the world today."  A 2018 U.S. State Department Human Rights report detailed instances of torture, sexual abuse, repressive ...

The Oscars announce new representation and inclusion requirements for Best Picture eligibility – CBS News

The Oscars have come under fire the past few years for lacking in diverse nominees across its categories. On Tuesday, however, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that movies will now have to meet new representation and inclusion standards in order to be eligible to be nominated for Best Picture — one of the "Big Five" categories of the annual event — which may make #OscarsSoWhite a trend of the past.  The new standards are a part of the Academy Aperture 2025 initiative, and were "designed to encourage equitable representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience," the Academy said in a statement. Similar to years past, the 2020 Oscars were criticized for a lack of representation, with film critic Justin Chang noting ...

Dear Annie: Is it wrong to asks guests to get tested for coronavirus before visiting? – cleveland.com

Dear Annie: My adult daughter, who lives in a southern state with a notoriously high incidence of the coronavirus cases, informed us she would be bringing her boyfriend to our home when she visits us at Christmas. I’ve never met this gentleman and do not know his personal or social habits. My wife and I have been quite cautious in our physical distancing during this pandemic. Is it discourteous to ask my daughter’s friend to take a COVID-19 test before he visits? -- Playing It Safe Dear Playing It Safe: It’s a reasonable request. But rather than unfairly singling out the boyfriend, all four of you should get tested in advance of the visit. This approach would not just be more courteous but more cautious. Call your doctor or check with your local health department to find testing location...

The Most Common Pain Relief Drug in The World Induces Risky Behaviour, Study Suggests – ScienceAlert

One of the most consumed drugs in the US – and the most commonly taken analgesic worldwide – could be doing a lot more than simply taking the edge off your headache, new evidence suggests.   Acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol and sold widely under the brand names Tylenol and Panadol, also increases risk-taking, according to a new study that measured changes in people's behaviour when under the influence of the common over-the-counter medication. "Acetaminophen seems to make people feel less negative emotion when they consider risky activities – they just don't feel as scared," says neuroscientist Baldwin Way from The Ohio State University. "With nearly 25 percent of the population in the US taking acetaminophen each week, reduced risk perceptions and increased risk-taking could...
