LEE COUNTY, Fla. – At least one person has tested positive for West Nile Virus, according to the Lee County Department of Health. West Nile Virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The DOH first issued a mosquito borne illness advisory on Sept. 26, noting the rise in mosquito-borne disease activity close to Lee County. Several sentinel chicken flocks had tested positive for the virus, but no humans cases were reported at the time. Most people infected with West Nile Virus do not feel sick. About 20 % of people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms such as headache, pain, and fatigue, according to the DOH. People with mild illness typically recover within a week.
