Taylor Swifts Surprise Set Folklore Had 2020s Biggest Debut — Heres How Its Still on Top Five Weeks Lat – Billboard

How would the music-listening public immediately respond to one of the steadiest pop stars of the 21st century throwing out her old playbook and releasing a muted collection of gauzy pop ballads and folky acoustic narratives with less than 24 hours' notice? Quite well, it turns out: Taylor Swift's Folklore debuted with a massive 846,000 in first-week album equivalent units, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, easily the biggest single week for any album in 2020. Still, that was just the first week. For an artist as well-known as Swift making such a dramatic left turn, you could probably guess that a large chunk of that opening number came from sheer listener curiosity, as news of the album's impending release spread rapidly through a nation still mostly under quarantine. "Surpri...

Watch Mariah Carey Casually Nail Her Whistle Tone While Taking a Joyride – Billboard

Mariah Carey showed off her iconic voice on social media during a casual joyride Thursday night (Sept. 10). "These days, even a car ride is uncommon but we made the most of it!" the superstar captioned the video, which features her riding along in the passenger seat as boyfriend Bryan Tanaka drives, casually hitting the whistle notes while singing along to her latest single "Save The Day." "If he won't/ And she won't/ Gonna have to learn to save the day," she crooned, nailing the studio version's ad libs before excitedly declaring, "This my part!" and jumping into her lower register. "Save The Day" serves as the lead single for Mimi's upcoming album of deep cuts and previously-unreleased tracks, The Rarities, which she's taking out of the vault and releasing to her Lambs on...

The sprint to create a COVID-19 vaccine started in January. The finish line awaits. – USA TODAY

For five days, the FedEx plane sat on the tarmac in Shanghai. American scientists at Novavax, a biotech company in suburban Maryland, waited with increasing impatience. The plane held a copy of a key gene from the newly discovered coronavirus. Novavax needed the gene to try to develop a vaccine. The scientists had been in similar situations before. Every time a new disease came along – SARS, MERS, Ebola – they made candidate vaccines to see whether they could tame it. They thought of their research as an experiment. But the longer the plane remained stuck, the more they wondered if this time might not be a drill. Race to the vaccine The second of an occasional USA TODAY series about efforts to rapidly develop and deliver a vaccine against the coronavirus. By Jan. 30, the fourth day, th...

A new coronavirus scam targets people who’ve ‘violated quarantine’ – The Verge

On September 8th, as the daily coronavirus case count ticked up to 28,550, the executive editor of The Verge received a strange email. “TC Sottek: We would like to inform you that you have been recorded as leaving your home on 3 occasions yesterday. A fine of $59 has been added to your gov.us account.” The fine had increased from $35 on September 1st, when Andrew J. Hawkins, a transportation reporter, received the same email. Both were told to visit www.gov.us/coronavirus/penalty-payment/tracking for more information. Unsurprisingly, this was not the US government suddenly taking a more active role in the pandemic. It was a scam, one not particularly attuned to the Trump administration’s hands-off approach to solving the coronavirus crisis...

Fauci says US must hunker down for fall, winter amid COVID-19 – New York Post

Although nearly 30 states are reporting downward trends in coronavirus cases, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned the nation not to let its collective guard down during the ongoing pandemic with the arrival of the flu season. “We need to hunker down and get through this fall and winter, because it’s not going to be easy,” the director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases said Thursday during a panel of doctors from Harvard Medical School, NBC News reported. The illness has claimed more than 190,000 lives in the US, which has more than 6 million confirmed cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. But those are just the infections that have been recorded, so the actual number could be far greater. Many may have been infected without knowing, as the...

I Am Woman Is a Beautiful, Authentic Story About Fame, Love, and Motherhood – Glamour

Thanks to actual footage from the women's movement in the ’70s—which is so timely it's eerie—the film takes on added significance. Says Moon, “Using real footage from that time not only brings out emotions in people, but it lands Helen's story in the greater context of what's happening in the world. We as women stand on the shoulders of the decisions that have been made before us, so I hope young women are inspired to learn more about what happened then and why it's important to make thoughtful changes now.” It's also why casting the right person to channel Reddy's talent, spirit, and fierceness was essential. Moon says she and the producing team searched five countries for the right actor, and interestingly, Cobham-Hervey (best known for playing Nanny Sally in Hotel Mumbai) wasn't even ...

Raised by Wolves review: Every kind of sci-fi movie in one big dreary show – The Verge

Raised by Wolves takes place in a distant future where the earth has been consumed by a war between atheists and believers. It’s a premise so insufferable you can almost feel it walking to your bookshelf to judge your taste. Thankfully, that’s kind of besides the point — at least for a while. The dazzling new sci-fi series is, at first, mostly about being raised by a robot mom who may or may not secretly want to kill you. And yet, it still manages to not be terribly exciting to watch. HBO Max’s latest show is pulling out all the stops. A lavish, expensive-looking series with the first two episodes directed by none other than Ridley Scott, Raised by Wolves is hard to ignore. It’s the sort of big, sweeping show that’s meant to fill the void left by Westworld or Game of Thrones, cerebr...
