Inconceivable!: More than 100,000 tune into A Virtual Princess Bride Reunion fundraiser for Wisconsin Democrats – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Wisconsin Democrats needed a fundraising boost. And the message from the original cast of "The Princess Bride" and their guests? "As you wish." More than 110,000 people donated at least $1 each to tune into "A Virtual Princess Bride Reunion" on Sunday night, making the online event an inconceivable fundraising win for Democrats here. "Tonight's once-in-a-lifetime Princess Bride reunion changes the odds on who wins Wisconsin," said Ben Wikler, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. "This is by a mile the biggest grassroots fundraiser that we have ever had." Wikler added that "chipping in to register for tonight, and post signing up to volunteer tonight, can make the difference between the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris administration, and another four years of the Trump nightmare." Most of t...

Concrete Cowboy: Film Review | TIFF 2020 – Hollywood Reporter

Idris Elba stars as an inner-city horseman with Caleb McLaughlin as his troubled teenage son in this drama set around the unique subculture of North Philly's Fletcher Street Stables. "Horses ain't the only thing that needs breaking around here," says one of the Fletcher Street Stables riders in Concrete Cowboy. She's referring to the wayward teenager who's been exiled for the summer to acquire some discipline from his estranged father. That familiar metaphor is hardly new, trotted out recently to stirring effect in The Mustang. But the occasional touch of cliché or corny dialogue can't dampen the vibrant spirit of this moving, well-acted drama about a fractured family coming together in unexpected ways. Based on the 2011 YA novel Ghetto Cowboy by Greg Neri, the film gets a capt...

Coronavirus: Rule of six comes into effect in England – BBC News

Image copyright Reuters Restrictions banning social gatherings of more than six people have come into effect in England, following a rise in coronavirus cases. The "rule of six", which applies both indoors and outdoors, does not exempt children under 12 in England. Similar restrictions in Wales and Scotland do not include children under 11 and 12 respectively. The government said the new rules on social distancing are easier for people to understand. But some Conservative MPs have pressed the government to follow Wales and Scotland in exempting young children. Ex-minister Steve Baker said the latest government action amounted to "arbitrary powers without scrutiny" and MP Desmon...

Should you send your child back to school? The expert consensus leans toward ‘yes,’ with caveats – The Boston Globe

Despite the uncertainty, experts consulted by the Globe say the latest scientific evidence skews strongly in favor of sending children to school — provided two conditions are met: Transmission of the virus should be low in the surrounding community, as is the case in most Massachusetts cities and towns; and the school system should be wholeheartedly adopting safety measures such as mandatory mask wearing, physical distancing, and opened windows or outdoor classrooms when feasible. “There are these horror stories coming from parts of the country that are still having high transmission [of coronavirus],” said Dr. Silvia S. Chiang, a pediatric infectious diseases physician at Rhode Island Hospital and assistant professor of pediatrics at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School. “I’m...

Trump rallies supporters in Nevada, seeks to overcome Biden lead in the state Republican President Donald Trump rallied his backers in Nevada on Saturday in a bid to drum up support in a state where polls show his Democratic rival Joe Biden is ahead. Going through a list of grievances about Democrats, the media, and mail-in voting, Trump spoke to a crowd of thousands at an airport outside of Reno where people stood close to one another and, in many cases, did not wear masks despite the coronavirus pandemic. The president mused about staying in office 12 years, despite constitutional limits that prohibit U.S. presidents from serving more than two, four-year terms. "We are going to win four more years in the White House and then after that we’ll negotiate, right, because we’re proba...
