Netflix Apologizes For “Inappropriate” ‘Cuties’ Poster That Was Criticized For Sexualizing Children – Deadline

Netflix has issued a swift mea culpa after a strong backlash today around the marketing of its forthcoming release Cuties. The largely well-received French-language pic won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance this year. It follows Amy, an 11-year-old girl who joins a group of dancers named “The Cuties” at school and rapidly grows aware of her burgeoning femininity — upsetting her mother and her values. The film is rated 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics generally praised it for its handling of sensitive topics. Netflix recently began promoting the movie ahead of its September 9 release on the platform. However, the accompany artwork has provoked a storm of online criticism, with many saying the poster sexualizes children. One Twitter user called it “di...

Ron Evans steals a trick from I/O, and points the way to a transformational diabetes therapy – Endpoints News

Salk Institute scientist and serial biotech entrepreneur Ron Evans showed new mouse work yesterday that could point to a long-sought holy grail for diabetes treatment. The study, published in Nature, involved a new approach for islet cell transplant, a diabetes therapy where dysfunctional insulin-producing cells on the pancreas are replaced with functional ones. The treatment has been around for a while and new ones are in development, but they’ve been hampered by the fact that patients will reject the cells unless they go on immuno-suppressive drugs. But, working with iPSC stem cells and tricks from immunotherapy, Evans and his team developed what they called “immune-evasive” clusters of cells — essentially mini...

NYC Releases Largest And Most Detailed Coronavirus Antibody Testing Data To Date – Gothamist

New York City has published the results of more than 1.8 million coronavirus antibody tests, along with a trove of demographic data that confirms prior testing and hospital data showing that poorer neighborhoods in the Bronx and Queens have been hardest hit by the pandemic. The data, which was initially released on the city's coronavirus data website on Tuesday and will be continually updated, breaks down positive antibody rates by borough, zip code, age and sex between April 11th through the week of August 8th. The city has categorized the tests based on the date of specimen collection, and aggregated them by week. A person tested twice in one week would only be counted once in that week. It may not, however, account for individuals who took the test again on a different we...

An ‘Unprecedented’ Effort to Stop the Coronavirus in Nursing Homes – The New York Times

The coronavirus crept into Heartland Health Care Center, a nursing home in Moline, Ill., on the last day of July, when a member of the nursing staff tested positive. It was an ominous sign: The virus can spread through a nursing home in a flash. Older people — who are often sick and frail and need regular hands-on attention — are uniquely susceptible. Staff members who care for residents are at high risk of infection and of unintentionally spreading the virus. Although nursing home residents make up just 1.2 percent of the United States population, they account for about 40 percent of Covid-19 deaths. But this time, the nursing home was not defenseless. Heartland was the first facility to participate in a large clinical trial of drug that might protect residents from the infection in nur...

Kirsten Dunst questions Kanye West about her likeness appearing on his campaign materials – Fox News

Kirsten Dunst was left baffled when Kanye West tweeted new presidential campaign materials featuring her face. COVID-19 has the potential to be as deadly as the 1918 flu – Live Science

The COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to become more deadly than the 1918 flu pandemic, a new study suggests. Remembered as the deadliest pandemic in recent history, the 1918 influenza pandemic infected one-third of the world's population and killed at least 50 million people, 675,000 of them in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At the time, there were no vaccines and no antibiotics to treat secondary infections that inevitably popped up in flu patients. However, society employed measures like the ones being used today to curb the spread, such as imposing quarantines and endorsing good personal hygiene, according to the CDC.  Over a century later, the world has found itself in the grip of another pandemic, this one caused by the coronavir...
