WHO warns coronavirus vaccine alone wont end pandemic: We cannot go back to the way things were – CNBC

The World Health Organization said Friday that a vaccine will be a "vital tool" in the global fight against the coronavirus, but it won't end the Covid-19 pandemic on its own and there's no guarantee scientists will find one.  World leaders and the public must learn to manage the virus and make permanent adjustments to their daily lives to bring the virus down to low levels, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a news conference from the agency's Geneva headquarters. "At the same time, we will not, we cannot go back to the way things were." Throughout history, outbreaks and pandemics have changed economies and societies, he said. "In particular, the Covid-19 pandemic has given new impetus to the need to accelerate efforts to respond to climate chang...

Mossimo Giannulli gets 5 months in prison in college admissions scam. Lori Loughlin will be sentenced later today – CNN

During the sentencing Friday, District Court Judge Nathaniel Gorton addressed Giannulli, telling the defendant he was convicted of a crime "motivated by hubris." "You certainly did know better and you helped sponsor a breathtaking fraud on our system of education and involved your wife and your two daughters in cheating and faking their way into a prestigious university," Gorton said. "You were not stealing bread to feed your family. You have no excuse for your crime. And that makes it all the more blameworthy." "He engaged more frequently with Singer, directed the bribe payments to USC and Singer, and personally confronted his daughter's high school counselor to prevent the scheme from being discovered, brazenly lying about his daughter's athletic abilities," wrote US Attorney Andrew ...

Florida government to release 750 million genetically engineered mosquitoes in unique experiment – TheBlaze

Florida authorities plan to release at least 750 million genetically modified mosquitoes into the Florida Keys beginning in 2021. The widely criticized move is said to be taking place to determine if a genetically altered mosquito is better than the option of spraying insecticides to control Aedes aegypti, which typically carry diseases such as chikungunya, yellow fever, Zika, and more, Fox News reported. What are the details? Local authorities on Tuesday gave the project the official go-ahead, prompting criticism from local residents and environmental advocacy groups alike. The controversial project already received state and federal approval. In a Wednesday statement, Jaydee Hanson, policy director for the International Center for Technology Assessment and Center for Food Safety,...

Evil has never been so banal as in The Vow, HBO’s docuseries on the NXIVM cult – The A.V. Club

Photo: HBO Home Entertainment TV ReviewsAll of our TV reviews in one convenient place. What does a cult member look like? Do they have wild eyes and a gaggle of similarly wacky friends, all sporting shaved heads and matching Nikes? Are they handing out flowers with a zonked-out smile outside of a train station? If that’s the case, then the members of NXIVM (pronounced “nex-ee-um”), the seemingly innocuous inspirational organization that’s the subject of HBO’s latest true-crime docuseries, don’t look like stereotypical cult members. They dress in khakis and button-down shirts. They have careers. They have families. They’re everyday people, espousing a system of self-help-inspired beliefs that has more in common with executive retreats than UFO lore. NXIVM’s teachings are a mishma...
