Coronavirus In Los Angeles County: Weekend Stats, News – Patch.com

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA — Los Angeles County reported another 1,098 cases of COVID-19 and eight additional deaths Sunday, bringing the county's totals to 231,695 cases and 5,545 fatalities. The relatively lower number of cases and deaths was attributed to reporting delays over the weekend. Officials have hailed declining hospitalization numbers and testing-positivity rates in recent weeks as signs the county has been successfully slowing the spread of COVID-19. Those numbers continued to trend in the right direction Sunday, with hospitalizations falling from 1,280 Saturday to 1,247, and 33 percent of those in intensive care. An average of roughly 2,200 hospital patients were seen in mid-July. Testing results were available for 2,182,882 individuals as of Sunday, with 10 percent of all pe...

COVID-19 in Illinois updates: Here’s what’s happening this weekend – Chicago Tribune

Illinois Public Health officials on Sunday reported 1,893 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 and six additional deaths. That brings the state’s total to 220,178 cases and 7,880 fatalities. There were 54,351 tests reported, a day after the state set another testing record with 56,766 tests. If Illinois doesn’t bring its steadily rising coronavirus numbers down quickly, it is among the areas of the country facing a “perfect storm” of risk factors for transmitting the highly contagious disease this fall, according to a Philadelphia medical research center that is tracking COVID-19 in hundreds of counties nationwide. Meanwhile, the Illinois Department of Public Health acknowledged Friday that the agency did not investigate nursing hom...

Justin Townes Earle, Americana Singer-Songwriter, Dead at 38 – Rolling Stone

Justin Townes Earle, the singer-songwriter known for his mix of old-timey roots music and modern-day Americana, has died at age 38. A rep for Earle’s label New West Records confirmed the musician’s death to Rolling Stone, though a cause of death was not immediately revealed. “It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin,” a post on Earle’s Instagram page read. “So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys. You will be missed dearly Justin.” Earle, a tall and gangly figure with a from-another-time aesthetic, was a captivating presence onstage, where he’d sometimes address the crowd in a carnival barker style. But it was his albums,...

How Zeynep Tufekci Keeps Getting the Big Things Right – The New York Times

When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told Americans in January that they didn’t need to wear masks, Dr. S. Vincent Rajkumar, a professor at the Mayo Clinic and the editor of the Blood Cancer Journal, couldn’t believe his ears. But he kept silent until Zeynep Tufekci (pronounced ZAY-nep too-FEK-chee), a sociologist he had met on Twitter, wrote that the C.D.C. had blundered by saying protective face coverings should be worn by health workers but not ordinary people. “Here I am, the editor of a journal in a high profile institution, yet I didn’t have the guts to speak out that it just doesn’t make sense,” Dr. Rajkumar told me. “Everybody should be wearing masks.” Ms. Tufekci, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina’s School of Information and Library Scienc...
