Two European cases of coronavirus re-infection reported | TheHill – The Hill

Two patients were reinfected with the coronavirus in Europe, according to local broadcasters who confirmed the incidents with virologists. The patients, one from Belgium and the other from the Netherlands, were confirmed to have been reinfected with COVID-19, Reuters reported. Marian Koopmans, a Dutch virologist, confirmed to broadcaster NOS that the patient from the Netherlands was elderly with a compromised immune system, but did not provide more details about the infection. Koopmans told NOS that in order for reinfection, a virus must change its genetic code. She added during the interview with the broadcaster that, given the veracity of the virus, recurrence of infection was to be expected.  “That someone would pop up with a reinfection, it doesn’t make me nervous,” she s...

Man becomes first known cancer victim to reveal terminal diagnosis after surgery was cancelled due to coronavirus – Yahoo Lifestyle

Adrian Rogers, pictured with wife Amanda Rogers, had his potentially life-saving surgery cancelled. (SWNS)Adrian Rogers, 46, has become the first known cancer patient to reveal his terminal diagnosis after his potentially life-saving surgery was cancelled in the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Rogers, from Retford in Nottinghamshire, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in July 2018, but after 18 months of chemotherapy, he was told his bowel was in an operable state in February this year. When COVID-19 hit, doctors decided it was too risky to go ahead with his surgery, which was scheduled for April. Now, the scaffolding supervisor and his wife, Amanda, 48, have been delivered the devastating news that his cancer is terminal. He has been told the number of tumours on his bowels ...

A Swiftie Found a Stash of Signed Folklore CDs and Did Exactly What Taylor Would Have Wanted – Billboard

A Taylor Swift fan in Green Bay, Wisconsin, reportedly got her hands on a coveted box of signed Folklore CDs, but instead of selling them for big bucks, she did exactly what Taylor would have wanted her to: she turned them in. Swifties were sent into a frenzy over the weekend when word leaked that the singer had shipped out signed copies of her surprise eighth LP to indie record stores around the nation. Thirty of those golden tickets were reportedly sent to the Exclusive Co. shop in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Saturday morning (Aug. 22), only manager Tom Smith was not there when they arrived at 9:45 a.m. He said he knew the shipment was coming and had gotten calls from fans eager to get their hands on the exclusive versions of the low-key collection, which has lodged four weeks at...

The New Mutants finally opens this week. Here’s why we’re not reviewing it – The A.V. Club

Here’s a sentence we weren’t sure we’d ever get to actually type: The New Mutants is definitely coming to theaters this weekend. For a while, there was reason to wonder if Josh Boone’s teen superhero spin-off (in all likelihood, the final installment in the Fox iteration of the X-Men film franchise) would ever see the light of day—or even if it was a real movie at all and not some memory of one from an alternate, dystopian timeline ruled by giant robots or an ageless supervillain. Shot some three years ago, this Marvel Comics adaptation has been bouncing around the calendar ever since: subjected to reshoots and re-edits, pushed back repeatedly by execs at Fox and then Disney, and most recently delayed because of COVID-19, mere weeks before it was scheduled to finally open. It’s with no sm...

Cases of COVID-19 reinfection in Netherlands, Belgium, national broadcaster reports – NBC News

Two European patients are confirmed to have been reinfected with the coronavirus, according to regional public broadcasters, raising concerns about people’s immunity to the virus as the world struggles to tame the pandemic. The news follows a report by researchers in Hong Kong released on Monday about a man there who had been reinfected four-and-a-half months after recovering from his first infection, suggesting that some patients who recover from COVID-19 may have only short-lived immunity to reinfection. Broadcasters said on Tuesday a patient in the Netherlands and another in Belgium had also been reinfected with the virus that has led to hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide and crippled the global economy. Dutch broadcaster NOS cited virologist Marion Koopmans as saying th...

Flu Season Could Make Coronavirus Testing Delays Even Worse – The New York Times

Come fall, the rise of influenza and other seasonal respiratory infections could exacerbate already staggering delays in coronavirus testing, making it easier for the virus to spread unnoticed, experts said. In typical years, doctors often don’t test for flu, simply assuming that patients with coughs, fevers and fatigue during the winter months are probably carrying the highly infectious virus. But this year, with the coronavirus bringing similar symptoms, doctors will need to test for both viruses to diagnose their patients — further straining supply shortages in an already overwhelmed testing system. A handful of manufacturers have begun making tests that can screen for several pathogens at once. But these combo tests are expensive and will likely make up only a fraction of the market....
