6 feet may not always be enough distance to protect from COVID-19, new report suggests – NBC News

The current guidance for safe social distancing may not be enough to stop the spread of COVID-19, a new analysis suggests. In the report, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Oxford say other factors, such as ventilation, crowd size, exposure time and whether face coverings are worn, need to be considered, as well. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the advice has been to keep at least 6 feet away from other people indoors and outdoors. "COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact (within about 6 feet) for a prolonged period of time," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Kevin Dietsch | Pool via Reuters The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is no longer recommending testing for everyone who's been exposed to Covid-19, saying people who don't have symptoms "do not necessarily need a test." The agency quietly revised its testing guidance for asymptomatic individuals Monday, advising people who are vulnerable to the virus to get tested if they have been within 6 feet of an infected individual for at least 15 minutes.  The agency previously recommended testing for anyone...

New Mutants Director Sets The Record Straight On How Much The Movie Has Changed – CinemaBlend

As most fans know, the biggest impediment to the release of The New Mutants has been the corporate deal known as the Fox/Disney merger, and the fact that all of the Marvel characters that used to belong to the former company now belong to the latter. The sale, which was completed in 2019, effectively put an end to the X-Men franchise that had been running since 2000… and that obviously left Josh Boone’s feature in a bit of an awkward place, what with it being the last title in the franchise to be completed.

From a Biogen conference to a homeless shelter: Researchers track coronavirus infections from superspreader events – USA TODAY

BOSTON — New genetic data helps tell the story of how COVID-19 arrived in Massachusetts, exploded across a hotel conference center, wormed its way into a nursing home, repeatedly struck a homeless shelter, and contributed to the virus' march around the globe. Although parts of the story have already been told and others remain elusive, genetic data from many of the COVID-19 infections in the Boston area in March and April helps fill some gaps. The new research tracks several "superspreading events" that may help public officials decide which activities are safe and which are dangerous, said Dr. Jacob Lemieux, who helped lead the study, which was posted online Tuesday but has not yet undergone scientific peer review.  One of the superspreading events took place in late February at a confer...

Huge coronavirus outbreak at Maine jail linked to indoor wedding reception – CBS News

A coronavirus outbreak at a Maine jail has now been linked to a recent wedding that left at least 60 people infected with COVID-19. According to the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC), 18 cases at the York County Jail in Alfred are the direct result of the wedding reception.  Dr. Nirav Shah, the director of Main CDC, said during a news conference Tuesday that a staff member at the jail attended the August 7 wedding and was one of the first people at the jail to test positive. Seven inmates, nine jail staff members and two York County government employees in the same complex have tested positive for the virus since, Shah said.   The indoor wedding reception at Big Moose Inn in Millinocket is now responsible for 60 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including o...

Justin Sullivan | Getty Images It's been almost eight months since Chinese scientists identified the coronavirus and doctors are still discovering new symptoms that can ravage the body and leave lasting damage months after recovery.  While more than 813,000 people have died from the disease, most of the more than 23.6 million people with confirmed infections have recovered. But it hasn't affected all of them the same. Once thought of as just a respiratory illness, Covid-19 is marked as much by the variety of potentially perilous ways it harms the body as it is for ...
