Some highlights include: Cases have increased by 7.27 percent since last Monday. The case doubling time is 46 days. Expressing cautious optimism about the success of efforts to control the coronavirus, L.A. County Public Health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said Monday that the closure of bars and elimination of indoor dining, along with cooperation from residents, have slowed the illness’s spread. Ferrer said the county is “cautiously optimistic that we’re getting back on track” in efforts to combat COVID-19, but she added, “I want to emphasize the word ‘cautiously.'” Ferrer pointed to steady declines in hospitalization numbers, which were averaging around 2,200 patients a day in mid-July but have dropped below 2,000. The number of new dcoronavirus cases in Colorado dropped 18% last week, marking the first week-over-week decline since confirmed infections began increasing in the state a month-and-a-half ago. The state health department recorded 3,243 new COVID-19 cases between July 27 and Sunday, down from 3,961 cases the prior week. The drop in new cases comes after Colorado saw infections rise for six consecutive weeks following a long decline, as more residents left their homes while the state reopened, which can increase the chances of exposure to the novel coronavirus. I mentioned a few posts ago that Hong Kong recorded fewer than 100 cases of Covid-19 for 3 August. Here’s some analysis from our correspondent, Helen Davidson: For the first time in two weeks Hong Kong has reported fewer than 100 new cases of Covid-19 in a day. On Monday evening health authorities said 80 people had been diagnosed with the virus, with the infection source unknown for 24 of them.
