Dear Abby: She didn’t invite me dress shopping, and now I want to skip the wedding – The Mercury News

DEAR ABBY: I read you every day. My daughter, the oldest of four children, and I had a falling-out because I paid for her education but she couldn’t be thankful. She was very entitled as a child, but it was important to me that she graduated. She’s a schoolteacher now. Jeanne Phillips When she asked me to pay for her wedding, I said, “Will you be thankful this time?” She stomped out and said, “I’ll do it myself!” I learned today that she went gown shopping with my mom and her fiance’s mother and excluded me. I am so angry, hurt and sad that I don’t even want to go to the wedding anymore. I could use some advice here. SAD IN ARKANSAS DEAR SAD: I’m surprised you had to demand gratitude from your daughter. She may have not learned appreciation because she was always handed everythin...

New XFL owners “love” having eight teams, and eventually having more than eight – NBC Sports – NFL

Getty Images The re-resurrected XFL will move forward under the management of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, his ex-wife and current business manager Dany Garcia, and Redbird Capital. Garcia spoke to Daniel Kaplan of TheAthletic.com regarding the vision for XFL 3.0, if/when the bankruptcy court approves the transaction. For starters, Garcia suggested that the XFL will have eight teams (and maybe in time more than that) — but that the locations of the teams will be reconsidered. “[W]e love eight teams,” Garcia said. “We love eventually having more than eight teams. I think we’ll be reviewing some of the markets as we should. There was a lot of great work that was done and was succeeding. But I think whenever you have time to reset, I thi...

UK risks twice-as-big second COVID wave without better testing, study finds – Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain faces a second wave of COVID-19 this winter twice as widespread as the initial outbreak if it reopens schools without a more effective test-and-trace system in place, according to a study published on Tuesday. FILE PHOTO: A view of a COVID-19 testing station manned by British military personnel inside London's Hyde Park, Britain, May 8, 2020. REUTERS/ Alexander Smith Researchers from University College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine modelled the impact of reopening schools either on a full- or part-time basis, thus allowing parents to return to work, on the potential spread of the virus. They concluded a second wave could be prevented if 75% of those with symptoms were found and tested and 68% of their contacts were traced, ...

Were thinking about Covid-19 the wrong way. Its not a wave – its a wildfire – The Guardian

We have no previous experience with a worldwide coronavirus pandemic, so when Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, began spreading, public health experts leaned on our experiences with influenza pandemics to inform their predictions. These pandemics are often described in terms of “waves” and “troughs”. We have now seen enough to replace the ocean analogy with a better one: wildfire. Like a wildfire, the virus relentlessly seeks out fuel (human hosts), devastating some areas while sparing others. It will continue spreading until we achieve sufficient herd immunity – when 50 to 70% of the population has developed protective antibodies – to significantly slow transmission. We will achieve herd immunity either through widespread infection or an effective and widely available vaccine....

Trump also presented a rushed timeline for a potential coronavirus vaccine, saying it may be available to the public even ahead of the end of the year. The following data was compiled by Johns Hopkins University: Global cases: More than 18.3 million  Global deaths: At least 694,715 U.S. cases: More than 4.71 million  U.S. deaths: At least 155,478

"Harry Potter" star Jason Isaacs is coming clean. Isaacs, who portrayed Lucius Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" film series, revealed that he had a "decades-long love affair with drugs" during an interview with the U.K.'s The Big Issue for its "Letter to My Younger Self" series.  "I’ve always had an addictive personality," Isaacs said. "By the age of 16 I’d already passed through drink and was getting started on a decades-long love affair with drugs." Isaacs said his struggle with addiction started with alcohol, which is commonly referred to as a gateway drug. The actor added that he first got intoxicated at age 12.  "The barman, who we thought at the time was a hero and I now realize belonged in prison, sneaked us a full bottle of Southern Comfort," the actor recalled. "We drank the enti...
