COVID-19 Statistics | Aug. 7, 2020 – Lost Coast Outpost

Press release from the Humboldt County Joint Information Center: Humboldt County’s total case count stands at 282, after two new cases were reported today. Due to the pace of increasing cases, Public Health yesterday raised Effectiveness of Disease Control to level three on the county’s Alert Level Assessment Tool. While this does not change the overall alert level, currently at three or level orange, Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich called the rise in cases concerning. “We’ve reported 49 cases just this week alone, and that represents about 17 percent of our total cases since February,” she said. “These developments should deepen our resolve to do everything we can to limit the spread of this virus.” Dr. Frankovich went on to say, “I’m deeply grateful to t...

The backlash against Ellen DeGeneres, explained – Vox.com

The most chaotic, dramatic story in television right now is whatever’s going on offstage at The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Reports of a toxic work culture, discrimination, and sexual harassment are tarnishing the 17-year-old, feel-good talk show’s reputation as a dreamland where celebrities become our closest friends, donations change lives, and a lot of clunky dancing takes place. The cracks in this veneer started off thin and narrow: As the show became a daytime TV juggernaut over the past two decades, rumors simultaneously circulated that DeGeneres was not as nice in person as the show portrayed her to be. But the cracks have spread over the past year, and became glaringly obvious during a memorable, uncomfortable interview on her show in November; months later, former employees began...

First human case of West Nile Virus in Massachusetts in 2020 identified – WCVB Boston

The first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Massachusetts this year was identified Friday, officials from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said. State health officials said the patient is a man in his 50s who was likely exposed to the virus in southwestern Essex County or eastern Middlesex County. Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel said Friday's announcement is a reminder of "the ongoing need to take precautions against mosquito bites to protect ourselves and our families."In 2019, there were five human cases of WNV infection identified in Massachusetts. WNV is usually transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe disease. The state health departm...

Aug 7 (Reuters) - Nearly 600 children were admitted to U.S. hospitals with a rare inflammatory syndrome associated with the novel coronavirus over four months during the peak of the pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report on Friday. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) is a rare but severe condition that shares symptoms with toxic shock and Kawasaki disease, including fever, rashes, swollen glands and, in severe cases, heart inflammation. It has been reported in children and adolescent patients about two to four weeks after the onset of COVID-19. With rising COVID-19 cases, there could be an increas...

U.S. judge ends decades-old movie theater rules set by Hollywood studios – CNBC

A federal judge on Friday granted the U.S. government's request to immediately end the Paramount Decrees, a set of antitrust rules from the late 1940s and early 1950s that ended Hollywood's monopoly on producing, distributing and exhibiting movies. U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres in Manhattan said the Department of Justice "offered a reasonable and persuasive explanation" for why terminating the consent decrees would "serve the public interest in free and unfettered competition." Last November, the Justice Department moved to end the decrees, enacted after the Supreme Court in 1948 said Hollywood's biggest studios had illegally monopolized the movie distribution and theater industries. New rules made it illegal for studios to unreasonably limit how many theaters could ...

HBOs Lovecraft Country review: Racial commentary meets witches and vampires – CNET

Courtney B. Vance, Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollet in Lovecraft Country. HBO Lovecraft Country is tough to categorize. The new HBO drama, which debuts Aug. 16, is set in the racially segregated Jim Crow America of the 1950s. But just when you think the story couldn't be more historically accurate, the show takes a turn to the paranormal.  I was often disturbed by Lovecraft Country, but not only by its monsters and evil spirits lurking in the dark. I was also filled with d...
