Los Angeles County Coronavirus Update: Young Adults “Now Driving Infections In L.A. County” As New Cases Among Residents 18-29 Explode – Deadline

Cases among young adults have increased steeply in the past 6 weeks and that age group is “now driving infections in L.A. County,” according to Los Angeles County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer. Ferrer made the statement at her regular coronavirus press conference. Adults ages 18-29 now have the highest case rates per 100,000 people of any demographic, at just over 25, she said. Children between 0 and 4 years old now have the second-highest case rate per 100,000 people, at just over 20. Ferrer said those two age groups have seen “explosive growth” in the past 6 weeks. Hawaii records 2 more deaths and 202 new coronavirus cases – Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Hawaii has recorded two more deaths and another 202 new coronavirus cases today, according to state officials and Lt. Gov. Josh Green. The two latest fatalities were Oahu men between 40-59 years old, at least one of whom had underlying health conditions, health officials said. The statewide death toll now stands at 38. The statewide total for coronavirus cases since the pandemic began is now 3,958. On the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s “Spotlight Hawaii” this morning, Green announced the 202 new cases and said 66 people with COVID-19 are currently hospitalized. A Florida father and son died from the coronavirus within five weeks of each other, The Miami Herald reported.  Retired gynecologist and obstetrician Jorge Vallejo, 89, died on June 27, six days after he was hospitalized at Palmetto General Hospital. His son, 57-year-old Carlos Vallejo, who is also a doctor, was hospitalized the same day his father died. Carlos Vallejo, who practiced as an internist, died Aug. 1 after spending 42 days in the intensive care unit at Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Fla.  Family members interviewed by the Herald believe that Carlos Valleja caught the disease after treating dozens of coronavirus patients, many of whom were elderly and in nursing homes.  Jorge Vallejo and his family were Cuban immigrants, and Jorge Vallejo himself was an outspoken crit...
