Meghan Markle says returning to the U.S. after a decade away was just devastating – Yahoo Entertainment

As Meghan Markle returned to the United States in the spring, royal husband Prince Harry in tow, the country had shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic and protestors filled the streets to call out systemic racism and police brutality. “To come back and to just see that state of affairs, I think at the onset, if I’m being honest, was just devastating,” Markle, who’d spent several years working as an actress in Canada before relocating to England with Prince Harry, said Friday during news organization the 19th’s virtual summit. “[It was] so sad to see where our country was in that moment.” The Duchess of Sussex, who stepped back from royal life in January, appeared in conversation with Emily Ramshaw, co-founder and CEO of the publication, which focuses on the intersection of gender an...

CDC finally revealed how long coronavirus immunity lasts – and it looks like bad news – BGR

How long does coronavirus immunity last after infection? The CDC quietly published the first defined COVID-19 immunity period on its website. The virus is too young for healthcare professionals to have an exact timeframe for protection against reinfection. The CDC quarantine page was updated a few days ago with information that offers a minimum period of immunity. How long does novel coronavirus immunity last? That’s a question health officials can’t answer for certain since COVID-19 hasn’t existed for long enough to tell. But it’s an answer we need not just for vaccine development, but also for the next stages of pandemic management. How long is a COVID-19 survivor protected for? How bad would a second COVID-19 bout be for people who already had it? Scientists ini...

COVID-19: These Are Symptoms You Will Most Likely Get First, New Research Reveals – Daily Voice

New research is revealing what COVID-19 symptoms are likely to come first for those who contract the disease. A study conducted by the University of Southern California and published in the Frontiers in Public Health says that a fever is the most likely first symptom, followed by a cough and then muscle pain. "Our results support the notion that fever should be used to screen for entry into facilities as regions begin to reopen after the outbreak of Spring 2020," the study said. The next most likely symptoms to appear are nausea and/or vomiting and diarrhea. “The upper GI tract (i.e., nausea/vomiting) seems to be affected before the lower GI tract (i.e., diarrhea) in COVID-19, which is the opposite from MERS and SARS,” the scientists wrote. Fever and ...

Saliva-based coronavirus test funded by NBA, NBPA gets emergency authorization from FDA – ESPN

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency authorization on Saturday allowing public use of a saliva-based test for the coronavirus developed at Yale University and funded by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association. The test, known as SalivaDirect, is designed for widespread public screening. The cost per sample could be as low as about $4, though the cost to consumers will likely be higher than that -- perhaps around $15 or $20 in some cases, according to expert sources. Yale administered the saliva test to a group that included NBA players and staff in the lead-up to the league's return to play and compared results to the nasal swab tests the same group took. The results almost universally matched, according to published research that has not yet been pee...

HBO’s Lovecraft Country: A spoiler-free review of the clever new series – Vox.com

In the second episode of Lovecraft Country, HBO’s engrossing new pulp horror series, one character, George (Courtney B. Vance), keeps thinking about a book. The book in question is the 1903 horror fantasy The House on the Borderland, and its plot is eerily similar to George’s present situation: He’s a Black man trapped in a strange mansion along with his friends, presented with various temptations and hallucinogenic visions — including dancing with a woman he knows to be a figment of his imagination. “Do the lovers stay together at the end?” his ghostly date asks of the story. “Yes,” he responds — but only because the giant house they're in collapses. There’s an obvious metaphor in the scene about the work Lovecraft Country is trying to do. The show’s story closely follows Matt Ru...
