Covid-19 leaves its impact on the heart, raising fears of lasting damage – STAT

Two new studies from Germany paint a sobering picture of the toll that Covid-19 takes on the heart, raising the specter of long-term damage after people recover, even if their illness was not severe enough to require hospitalization. One study examined the cardiac MRIs of 100 people who had recovered from Covid-19 and compared them to heart images from 100 people who were similar but not infected with the virus. Their average age was 49 and two-thirds of the patients had recovered at home. More than two months later, infected patients were more likely to have troubling cardiac signs than people in the control group: 78 patients showed structural changes to their hearts, 76 had evidence of a biomarker signaling cardiac injury typically found after a heart attack, and 60 had signs of inflam...

The Coronavirus May Shut Down Our Sense of Smell in an Unexpected Way – Gizmodo

A new study suggests that infection by the novel coronavirus can damage important cells that support the nerve cells responsible for relaying scent to the brain. The partial or full loss of smell, also known as anosmia, is occasionally caused by many respiratory infections, including covid-19. There’s even some evidence that anosmia is a more accurate predictor of having covid-19 than other well-known symptoms, like fever or dry cough. One mystery that has endured, though, is exactly how covid-19 leads to anosm...

Spanking has declined in America, study finds, but pediatricians worry about impact of pandemic – CNN

"This article is really impressive ... and corresponds with our view that there's been a generational change," said child abuse pediatrician Dr. Robert Sege, lead author of the American Academy of Pediatrics' policy statement on corporal punishment. "Younger people tend not to hit their children," said Sege, who was not involved in the new study. "As we've woken up to the issues of domestic violence and intimate partner violence there's been a growing rejection of any sort of violence within the home, including spanking." The new analysis used data from the Monitoring the Future study, a national survey of 25 consecutive groups of graduating high school seniors between 1993 and 2017. Each group was reassessed 17 years later, at about 35 years of age. The study excluded those without child...

Michigan confirms first 2020 case of rare ‘polio-like’ illness in Macomb County child – WDIV ClickOnDetroit

DETROIT – Michigan has confirmed its first case of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in 2020, a rare condition that attacks the nervous system, specifically in children. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Service (MDHHS) confirmed the first case in a child in Macomb County. Two others possible cases are being monitored. As of June 30, the CDC had confirmed 13 cases of AFM in 10 states for 2020, mostly in children. Despite increases in cases across the country since 2014, the CDC estimates that less than one to two in a million children in the United States will get AFM annually. In 2018, Michigan reported five cases and one case in 2019. “AFM is a rare but serious condition affecting the nervous system and can cause the muscles and reflexes in the body to become weak,” said Dr. Jonei...

RELATED STORIES When Kathie Lee Gifford saw her friend and former Live With Regis and Kathie Lee co-host Regis Philbin earlier this year, she recalled Monday, she had a feeling something wasn’t quite right. “I sensed much more fragility than I’d seen in him since the last time in January, out in Los Angeles,” she told Today‘s Hoda Kotb. After Philbin and his wife, Joy, left, Gifford recalled, “I just thought to myself, ‘Lord, is that the last time I’m going to see my friend?’ Because he was failing, I could tell.” Philbin died Friday of natural causes. He was 88. In an Instagram post on Saturday, Gifford reflected on the years of her career spent “bantering and bickering and laughing ourselves silly” with Philbin, adding that she “simply adored him and every day with him wa...

Nick Corderos son says his first words: He still knows who his Dada is – Yahoo Entertainment

Nick Cordero’s son has reached a special milestone: He said his first words — and they were about his late dad. Amanda Kloots shared a sweet video of Elvis, 1, following her instruction Sunday by giving a kiss to “Dada” — a photo of the Broadway star, who died July 5 from complications from COVID-19, on a tabletop lantern. While doing so, the happy and giggling toddler chatted about “Dada” being “right there” — a heartwarming moment. “Elvis said his first words today!! Listen closely!” Kloots, a Broadway dancer turned fitness instructor, shared along with the video on Instagram. “He pointed at Nick in our new picture light and said ‘right there.’ He hasn’t seen Nick since March 30th. The fact that he still knows who his Dada is, point to him and give him a kiss to me is amazing.” The a...
