In search for a coronavirus early warning system, scientists look to the sewers – NBC News

LONDON — Poop doesn’t lie. That’s why scientists are looking at sewers running under the world’s cities and towns for information they hope will help to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Sewers are treasure troves of information, containing genetic material of COVID-19 shed by those with the virus in their fecal matter — even if they are asymptomatic. A recent study has also shown that viral levels in wastewater correlated with clinically diagnosed new COVID-19 cases and might reflect disease prevalence before it’s reported by doctors, raising hopes that the sewage could become an early warning system — a canary in a coal mine of sorts — for new outbreaks. A water company worker climbs down into a sewage pipe in London. Researchers hope that sewage testing can help conclusively quanti...

California man expresses regret over attending party in post day before he died of coronavirus – Fox News

A Southern California man expressed his regret late last month over attending a party where he contracted the coronavirus in a Facebook post just one day before he died. “Because of my stupidity I put my mom and sisters and my family’s health in jeopardy,” Tommy Macias of Lake Elsinore, east of Los Angeles, wrote in the post, according to KCBS-TV. “This is no joke. If you have to go out wear a mask and practice social distancing. Hopefully with God’s help, I’ll be able to survive this. Love you all.” Macias wrote that he had “messed up” and gone out a couple of weeks earlier where he contracted the virus. 105 University of Washington students in frat houses test positive for coronavirus – CBS News

More than 100 students living in fraternity houses near the University of Washington campus have reported testing positive for COVID-19, with hundreds of results pending. The Interfraternity Council, a student-led governing board for UW fraternities, said that at least 105 residents living in 15 fraternity houses have self-reported that they tested positive, CBS affiliate KIRO-TV reports. The university learned Saturday that some fraternity residents had symptoms of COVID-19, and public health officials noticed a spike in cases among people ages 18 to 20, according to university spokeswoman Michelle Ma. Ma said more than 800 students have been tested since Monday in response to the Greek system outbreak. The university expects to have an updated case count early next week. The Interfrat...

Coronavirus detectives couldn’t get partygoers to answer the phone. So they issued subpoenas. – The Washington Post

So this week, county health officials tried a much more drastic approach. They issued subpoenas to eight of the partygoers, ordering them to speak up to the disease detectives or face a fine of up to $2,000 a day — and it worked. “It’s amazing how smart some people got,” Ed Day, the county executive, told CNN on Thursday. “Everybody is complying and helping us, which is all that we’re trying to have happen. … We’re not looking to be punitive here.” After people across the country rose up against lockdown measures, ignored social distancing requirements and declared war on face masks, Rockland County’s unapologetic legal strategy shows just how difficult it may be to get the country to comply with another crucial piece of the government’s response to a pandemic that has surged in recent...

Hear David Gilmour’s First New Song in Five Years ‘Yes, I Have Ghosts’ – Rolling Stone

David Gilmour is finally giving a wide release to his first new song in five years, “Yes, I Have Ghosts.” Previously, the former Pink Floyd frontman released the tune via the audiobook edition of his wife and long-time collaborator Polly Samson’s novel, A Theatre for Dreamers. Over a waltzing acoustic guitar line and harp played by Gilmour’s daughter, Romany, he sings about “specters of strangers” and fleeting faces in a crowd. “Yes, I have ghosts,” he sings, “Not all of them dead/Making dust of my dreams/Spinning round and around, around in my head.” With its folky textures and lilting melodies, the track bears strong echoes of the music of Leonard Cohen, who appears as a character in A Theatre for Dreamers. It also benefits from Romany’s backup vocals, which combine beautifully wi...

RuPaul Has Deleted His Social Media Presence and No One Knows Why – TooFab

The "Drag Race" host has been on an intentional three-month social media hiatus amid COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter protests, but now that silence has turned into absence. There are 4.2 million people following RuPaul's Instagram, but there are plenty more wondering just what happened late Wednesday night as the "Drag Race" host's entire online social media presence just vanished. While the Instagram account is still there, just stripped of all content, his Twitter account appears to have vanished entirely, as has his Facebook presence. Love Thy Neighbourhood

Verve People Text by Supriya Thanawala. Photographed by Prashant Giani Mumbai’s proactive citizens and environmentalists have been down a long, tedious path. What began in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a humble attempt in neighbourhood activism through local ALM (Advance Locality Management) groups — those that relentlessly urged the BMC and government authorities to fix their broken potholes and water woes — has turned into a much more complex political drama today. With a plethora of environmental cases over the metro and coastal road project lying undecided in courts, the citizens’ spirits have oscillated from cause to cause, protest to protest, and now as the city waits for infras...
