Nerve damage may explain some cases of long COVID -U.S. study – Yahoo News

By Julie Steenhuysen CHICAGO (Reuters) - A small study of patients suffering from persistent symptoms long after a bout of COVID-19 found that nearly 60% had nerve damage possibly caused by a defective immune response, a finding that could point to new treatments, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday. The study involved in depth exams of 17 people with so-called long COVID, a condition that arises within three months of a COVID-19 infection and lasts at least two months. "I think what's going on here is that the nerves that control things like our breathing, blood vessels and our digestion in some cases are damaged in these long COVID patients," said Dr. Anne Louise Oaklander, a neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a lead author on the study published in Neurology: Neuroimmu...

Key to stopping Alzheimers could lie in your GUT – NOT your brain, experts now say – Daily Mail

They key to stopping dementia could lie in the gut rather than the brain, new research suggests.  Decades of studies from around the world costing billions of pounds have so far failed to uncover a way of tackling the memory-robbing disease.  But the gut 'represents an alternative target that may be easier to influence with drugs or diet changes', experts have said.  A series of experiments linking the gut to the development of Alzheimer's are to be presented today at a medical conference. One will reveal how the microbiomes — the community of bacteria in the gut — of patients with the condition can differ massively to those without the disorder. Another found rodents given faecal transplants directly from Alzheimer's patients perform worse on memory tests. A third study saw brain stem ce...

Bucatini all’Amatriciana Recipe

A Classic Roman Dish - Bucatini all'Amatriciana Like many of you, Meg and I watched the Stanley Tucci special on CNN called Searching for Italy. In the Rome episode, he has lunch at Armando Al Pantheon to enjoy their famous rigatoni all'amatriciana, one of Rome's famous pastas. I made it a little different and call it bucatini all'Amatriciana. Of course I had to run out and buy the ingredients so we could make it at home. Not a lot of ingredients and very simple to prepare and absolutely delicious. Let's look at some of the ingredients. Bucatini Bucatini is a pasta that looks a lot like spaghetti but it is thicker and has a whole running down through the strand. My kids like to say it looks like a straw made out of pasta.  If you lived in Naples, Italy, you would call...

Nearly 90% of COVID patients who didnt get critical care therapy they needed died despite being young and healthy, study says – USA TODAY

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reconfigures its masking guidelines to consider health systems, a recent study highlights the importance of keeping hospital capacity and resources at the forefront of pandemic strategy. Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center looked at how a shortage of ECMO machines affected COVID-19 patients at the height of the pandemic, according to the report published last week in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. An extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine, or ECMO, is a heart-lung device that pumps blood out of the body, removes carbon dioxide, and sends oxygen-filled blood back to the body, according to the Mayo Clinic. Once a patient was determined to be medically eligible to receive ECMO, a separate ...
