Self-inflating-air-mattressWe all know what it is like to sleep over at a friends house without an extra mattress available. If you are lucky, you get to sleep on the couch around a miserable little air mattress. If you are unlucky, however, you have to sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag, or on pillows scattered about. When I first saw self inflating air mattresses, I figured they were just another gimmick. Why would a self inflating air mattress, after all, be any better than the regular type? Of course it would be easier to blow up, but it would probably also be easier to rip. My experience with the air mattress self inflating really changed my mind. It was quite an experience.
My friend had actually gotten the inflating bed at a discount mattress store. It was rather a low-end self inflating air mattress, and the model had been discontinued. Nevertheless, it was the most comfortable portable bed that I had ever slept on. It was better than a camp bed by far, and even better than a foldout couch! The self inflating air mattress was actually every bit as comfortable as a normal mattress. Although I am sure that it would not have been comfortable on a hot summer night, on that cold winter night with plenty of blankets it was wonderful. You can get comfortable in any position on the self inflating air mattress, and when it was covered with sheets and a mattress pad it felt almost exactly like a real bed.
I have heard that the self inflating air mattress has even done some things to change the regular mattress industry. Apparently, mattress comfort can be greatly improved by the addition of adjustable air inside of the mattresses core. Adding an air pump means that both partners can adjust the bed to their appropriate comfort level. One person might use the self inflating air mattress to make the bed really firm, while the other one might let it stay soft and pliable. That way, if both people have strongly different preferences, they can still sleep in comfort.
The only problem with self inflating air mattresses is that many of the stores will not let you try them out. You really should go to one that does, because you never know how good a self inflating air mattress is until you try it. If you have slept on the old variety of air mattresses, you know how uncomfortable they are.
